If you have a fireplace, chances are it will get a lot of use during the winter season. Between the sounds of crackling wood and all the heat that your fireplace puts out, it can quickly become the center of your home. To ensure your fireplace is in good working order for the coldest part of the year, keep these maintenance tips in mind.
Start outside
· Make sure your chimney cap is in good condition, and still there. Replace it if necessary.
· Remove any debris or bird nests that are blocking the cap.
· Trim back any tree limbs that are too close to your chimney or hanging over the top.
· Look for cracks in the bricks and mortar of your chimney and make any repairs as soon as possible.
· Make sure you can see the flue liner above the chimney crown.
· Check the roof flashing to ensure it is tight against the chimney.
Head inside
· Use a flashlight to check the flue damper and ensure it closes, opens, and properly seals.
· Check the flue for flammable material, such as animal nests, when the damper is open. You should be able to see the sunshine at the top of the chimney.
· Check the hearth and areas around your fireplace for any cracks in the mortar or bricks and call in the professionals if you find damage.
For
gas fireplaces
· Check the glass doors for any cracks or issues with the latch.
· Make sure the gas logs are properly positioned.
· Turn off the gas and test the igniter.
· Light the fire and check for any burner holes that are clogged. If you find any issues, turn off the gas and clear the obstruction.
