How to Store Your Summer Car Away for Winter

Prepare Your Summer Vehicle for Winter Storage

If you live in Connecticut, you have probably noticed a flurry of activity in your neighborhood. Neighbors are already raking the leaves, putting away their yard furniture, and reeling in the garden hoses. If you have a fun summer vehicle that you don’t want to expose to harsh winter conditions, now is the time to prepare it. Along with quality auto insurance, you can keep your vehicle safe with these winter storage tips.
  • Select the right storage location
Ideally, you will keep your car away from freezing temperatures, rain, frost, and storms by storing it in the garage all winter long. If you don’t have a covered place to keep your vehicle, consider looking for a storage facility that is secure.
  • Wash it down
Before you tuck it away for winter, clean the exterior of it, giving it a good scrub and wax. Pay special attention to insect remnants, bird droppings, and tree sap that could hurt the car’s paint.
  • Add fuel stabilizer
Over time, fuel breaks down and causes damage to your carburetor or fuel injector components. A fuel stabilizer can prevent a breakdown, and it helps to keep gas fresh up to a year. Once the stabilizer has been added, take the car on a drive to ensure that the fuel and the product mix together.
  • Top up the tires
It’s always recommended that the tires are properly inflated, and this is still important even when your car is not going to be in use. Top up the tires to the maximum PSI rating on the tire’s sidewall.
  • Remove the battery
Unused batteries will lose their charge over time. Remove your battery and store it somewhere safe and dry. Consider getting a trickle charger to keep your battery in good working condition over the winter.
  • Talk to your insurance agent
Call your insurance agent to discuss the coverage you have on the vehicle. You should have all-encompassing insurance to protect your vehicle and wallet thoroughly. You may consider increasing your comprehensive coverage over the winter months in case your car is damaged by fire, theft, vandalism, falling objects, or natural disasters.
