Motorcycle Safety Tips to Follow This Summer

Use these tips to keep you safe on the road when riding your motorcycle this summer.

Motorcycles are unlike any other vehicle out there because you are not enclosed by a steel cage: it's just you and the road. The feeling is amazing, but to gain something one must often lose something. In this case, it's losing some–if not all–of your safety. Because you're not trapped in your car's metal frame, there's nothing to absorb the force of another vehicle colliding with you, and there's nothing other than the leather of your jacket to take some of the friction when you hit the pavement. This is what makes motorcycles so dangerous, and why you must make sure to be safe, even more so during the summer months with more drivers on the road. Here are some tips you can use to keep you safe while you ride your motorcycle.

1. Wear a Helmet

Your cranium may be pretty solid, but it's not going to hold up when you're going upwards of 70 miles per hour and it meets solid concrete. Using a DOT certified helmet is important to keep you safe, should you be involved in an accident. Brain damage and death are very serious, and a helmet can protect you when you need it most!

2. Don't Underestimate the Power of Good Gloves

Think about it: the first thing you do when you're falling is what? You put your hands out. It's instinct that goes back millions of years, and when you're falling, all you're going to have is instinct. Wearing a good pair of biker gloves will keep your hands protected from the concrete. If paper cuts render your entire hand disabled, imagine what a giant flesh wound would do to you.

3. Be Visible

Motorcycles are way more likely to be involved in an accident than any other vehicle. This is because motorcycles are streamlined and people can't always see them. Be sure to wear reflective gear and that your headlights and blinkers are bright. Using LED lights should do the trick. When it comes to your safety, it's always better to have something and not need it than not have it and need it. The same can be said about quality motorcycle insurance.
