New Teen Driver? Parents, Take a Look at These Tips

Advice on how to handle your teen passing their driving test.

Most teen drivers are beyond excited to get their driver’s license. It’s a rite of passage and the first step to freedom. However, for parents, it’s a very scary time. Although they may be jumping for joy, you may be worried about them taking the wheel. After all, you know how dangerous the road can be. Once new teen drivers pass the road test to get their license, a parent’s role doesn’t end. In fact, the first year of driving is the most dangerous. It’s important to address issues or any concerns your teen may have as well as establishing driving rules that give you peace of mind. Safety rules to reinforce:
  • Check in with a parent every time you drive
  • Do not take unnecessary risks while driving
  • Obey all traffic laws, signs, and speed limits
  • Eliminate all driving distractions
  • Always wear a seat belt
  • No drinking and driving. Ever
For newly licensed teens:
  • No driving friends in the car for the first six months
  • No nighttime driving (allow daytime driving at first, gradually increase the driving curfew after a parent-supervised practice driving at night)
  • No high-speed roads
  • No driving in bad weather
